For over 150 years, through generation after generation, the trains have been a part of St. Louis. Rose Etzkorn’s home town of Kirkwood was named after Pacific Railroad’s then-chief engineer, James Pugh Kirkwood, and to this day their train station is that town’s focal point. But for Rose Etzkorn the trains of St. Louis are much more than that. They are a symbol of how the most important things in life span the generations. Just as the trains continue to come and go, the timeless values and heritage of the St. Louis area still remain.

A Sense of Community

It is no surprise to learn that the Kirkwood Train Station is one of Rose’s favorite places in the St. Louis area. When the City of Kirkwood “adopted” the station in 1993 after AMTRAK budget cuts, a cadre of loyal volunteers was formed that runs the station to this day—one of whom is Rose’s husband of 50 years, Larry Etzkorn. Keeping traditions alive and well is very important to Rose, who raised her five children here. She has been an active volunteer and supporter in a number of organizations herself, from the St. Louis Symphony Volunteer Association to the Missouri Botanical Gardens.

The Importance of Family

One of nine children, Rose was born in Chicago but has lived in the St. Louis area since her teens. Rose credits her mother for keeping her lively and boisterous family humming. “She was very bright and resourceful,” says Rose, “and she taught me to be the same.” Despite attending four different high schools, Rose graduated with good grades. She went on to receive a degree in Interior Design from Meramec Community College. After working briefly with McDonnell Aircraft and raising her children, Rose enjoyed a successful tenure in interior design.

A Heritage Continued

Rose’s ties to the St. Louis area remain very strong indeed—some of her children still live here, as do many of her grandchildren. With three generations of the Etzkorn family in the area, maintaining that connection to her community is very important to Rose, and nowhere is that more evident than in her career as a real estate professional. Whether she is working with a first-time home buyer from out of the area or a long-term resident who has decided to downsize to more manageable living quarters, Rose is never less than fully invested in the needs of her clients.
